The shelter kept in touch with me to see how it was going. After a month, I told them she would not be going back, we belonged to each other...for life. Bambi and I worked together every day, training, and traveling, and learning how we could fill each other's needs. She eagerly learned to help me in exchange for lots of love & kisses, a warm bed (mine), and good healthy food.

This place is wonderful, clean and the staff is very helpful. Adopt an animal and you will be so happy. Please donate food or anything you can

Then I got a phone call from Carroll County Humane Society about a couple of little girls that may qualify. I went to see them and ran them through the basic testing for trainees. Since Cindy had knowledge of these girl's temperaments, she helped me make an educated decision. The shelter was made aware that the dog had to pass all criteria for Service Dog training and they agreed if she ended up not qualifying for any reason, that I could bring her back. The next day I went back and came home with the smartest little 2 yr old Italian Greyhound. Her name was Bambi, so named because she looked like a little dear.

I hate to be the one to do this, but this Humane Society is not what it used to be. I actually used to work here as a volunteer, at the old building. Almost a month ago, I was searching for a new kitten to bring home, and as usual I started here. I have adopted cats here several times in the past, and if for some reason I could not keep them, I brought them back...even donating money while doing so...after paying the adoption fees and whatnot. It's an animal shelter, so it would be insane to expect it to smell lemony fresh, but my husband and I were both hit with a wave of stench upon stepping out of our truck. The excuse that the weather was hot cannot be valid, as I worked at the old one in all seasons and this never happened. We both noticed that there was an essential oil diffuser on a window sill when we entered the office and a bottle of oil next to it, but it was not turned on. The stench was even worse. A worker did greet us quickly, and took us straight to the cat rooms. That is when I started to become irritated. There were up to ten cats/kittens being kept in rooms smaller than a large closet found in a double wide mobile home. Granted, they have ledges and shelves that the cats can walk and climb, but to have this many cats in such a small room is ridiculous. To make matters worse, we came shortly before closing and the litter boxes appeared not to have been scooped or cleaned in several days. I know because cleaning the cat rooms at the old facility was my main responsibility. There is no excuse for this, as I did this by myself Monday through Friday. Another person took care of the dogs. We helped each other when we could, and our responsibilities were handled by the end of the shift. The day I was there, there was at least four workers. Then, when my husband and I went in each cat room to meet the cats, each and every cat smelled so strongly of urine it was unreal. My kids asked why I smelled like I peed myself when I returned home...and I live 30 minutes away. Frankly, I was disgusted. We found 3 cats that we were interested in, and were told that we had to fill out an application by the current manager. I filled it out and explained to him that I had worked as a volunteer and assistant manager a few years ago, and had adopted several cats from them. He told me that the board would have to approve my application and I asked him how long it would take, as my husband works 70+ hours per week and I would need to work around a schedule to pick one up. He assured me that he would give my application to the board that day and would remind them of who I was and have an answer for me by the next weekend. Needless to say, he did not turn it in that day, because I called and asked. He forgot. Then the next weekend I called and he told me that the board members had not been able to go over my application. By this time, I had my eye on a kitten in Clarksville and told him that I would appreciate his getting back with me soon or I would just try for that one. He said he would let me know. Well, he didn't get back with me at all to tell me yes or no. I got a free kitten that already had all its shots and whatnot. Until now I had always been for adopting from this shelter. Never again, and that's a shame because an animal lost out on a good home and loving family.

My 11 yr old Service Dog passed away while I was in Alaska on vacation. I have 26 yrs experience as a trainer and Canine Behaviorist; so when I came home I immediately began a search for a new friend that I could train as my Service Dog. I sent out numerous applications detailing the specifics of the qualifications I needed for a trainee. Many shelters never answered my query. Others offered me dogs that did not come close to what I was looking for.

This is the MOST caring and conscience Humane Society I have EVER been acquainted with, and after volunteering with rescue for 26 years I've seen more than my share. The people interact with their 4-legged friends, showing how much they care.

The volunteers here are tirelessly devoted to the cause! Helpful, caring & kind as well! Should an opportunity arise to help them with time or finances, please do not hesitate! Adopt a pet from this no-kill facility if you're looking for one.

The lady at the front desk was very hateful and rude...I was telling her about the cat had green stuff coming out of it "she said that's lie"..I would never go back.

After six weeks Bambi earned her Canine Good Citizenship Certification. Two months ago she was registered as a Certified Service Dog. Bambi now travels EVERY where with me and my husband. Last month we flew to Las Vegas for a conference and Bambi rode up front with me in the airplane. She went to the hospital with me and lay by my bedside during my stay. Bambi still has some kinks to work out, such as when the weather changed she became fearful and developed a constant shiver of insecurity because her last home tied her outside during a hard freeze and she lost the tip of her ears to frostbite. But we bundle her up on our lap and let her know she'll never be cold ever again. She still has a few issues, but then so do I.....so neither of us are perfect. But we are perfect for each other, and that's what counts. And thanks to the helpful staff at Carroll County Animal Shelter, Bambi and I rescued each other.
